As a photographer, every maternity shoot is an opportunity to tell a unique story, and nothing brings out the beauty of the journey to motherhood like a multi-faceted photoshoot. Recently, I had the privilege of capturing a breathtaking coastal maternity session in Santa Cruz, which was divided into multiple sections, each showcasing a different varieties of backdrops and outfits, creating a diverse and beautiful collection of images. If you're thinking about a maternity session by the coast, here’s why breaking your session into various parts can elevate your photos and make them even more special.

personalized & unique to YOU

Breaking up your maternity shoot lets you really express who you are. Whether you’re rocking a flowy boho beach dress or a cute bikini top and skirt, you can pick a few outfits that feel totally you. This flexibility gives your photos that unique personal touch, making them a special part of your pregnancy journey. Switching things up with different outfits and backdrops keeps the session fresh and exciting, so you never feel bored or uncomfortable. It also makes the whole experience more relaxed and enjoyable, giving you lots of opportunities to just soak in the moment. By breaking your shoot into different parts, you get a mix of looks, emotions, and memories. Whether you love the peaceful vibe of the coast or the bold beauty of the cliffs, these small changes make the day feel personal, meaningful, and unforgettable. It’s your story, your way.

more variety

Changing outfits and backdrops really adds that extra something to your maternity shoot. The California coast is full of natural beauty—everything from soft, sandy shores to the dramatic cliffs. With so many options, it keeps things fresh and exciting. For this shoot, we truly hit the jackpot. We started by parking next to a breathtaking field of wildflowers, which was just the perfect touch of color and texture. Then, we made our way down to the beach, which turned out to be one of the most stunning locations I've ever shot at. The contrast of the blue water and the golden rocks? Absolute dream material! Having a Santa Cruz photographer who’s familiar with the area can really make a difference. It's all about choosing the perfect location, taking advantage of natural light, and tailoring the experience to be as unique as you are.

multiple outfits:

Choosing the right outfit for your maternity shoot is all about comfort and showcasing your beautiful bump. Here are some tips for choosing the perfect look:

1. Embrace Your Bump

Opt for form-fitting dresses or tops that accentuate your bump. Stretchy fabrics like jersey or chiffon are great options to highlight your curves.

2. Flowy Dresses

Maxi or flowy dresses create a soft, ethereal look and work beautifully for outdoor shoots. They add movement and elegance to your photos.

3. Soft, Neutral Colors

Pastels, whites, and soft blushes are flattering and blend well with natural settings like beaches or fields.

4. Add Texture

Lace, silk, or crochet fabrics add depth and interest to your outfit without taking attention away from you and your bump.

when should I book my maternity shoot?

Timing is so important to consider when planning your maternity photo session! You’ll want to schedule your session towards the end of your second trimester and beginning of your third trimester (between 26 – 32 weeks). This ensures that your bump has clearly popped, but you’re still feeling energetic, mobile, and able to breathe easily! You’ll still be feeling your pregnancy glow, with your skin and hair likely looking vibrant. Many people find this time to be the peak of their pregnancy radiance.
